Reviews for Little Songs Unabridged

“In her genre-bending CD debut Little Songs Unabridged, Lesley Littlefield masterfully paints wise and witty portraits for both tykes and sages alike using her pallet of colorful lyrics, vocal quality of a gentle breeze, and acoustic instrumentation including folk guitar, sweet pennywhistle, haunting violin, and juke-joint oud. Quirky caricatures unfold while this sprite of a song-smith pays homage to 17th-century folk ballads with “The Geologist Song,” “The River Song,” “Prosimian,” and “Billowbrox Tan.” One is reminded of Joni Mitchell's “Paved Paradise” in Littlefield’s “Purple Maple Tree” and “The Farmer John Song.” She evokes the musical style of Patsy Cline's “Blue Moon of Kentucky” in “Lucy and the Barefoot Girls.” She surprises us with a 1960's-style sitar meditation in “Confidence Communiqué,” and accesses the seedier side of life in “Old Man” with the lyrics “...she glances at his wallet as he raises her dress.” And finally, in her inimitable innocence, she extols that universal pastime of pleasure in “Four More Times” (Did she really masturbate four more times, then another two and another nine?!) Due to lyrical content, Little Songs has been released in two versions: a family-friendlier abridged version and an unabridged version for the rest of us. Both versions include a DVD complete with sparkling music videos of a few of the songs. Abridged or unabridged, Littlefield's Little Songs leaves this fly on the wall buzzing “Bravo! Bravo!””

“Veiled behind a light and genuine approach are serious concerns that emerge dance between the lyrics of Lesley's material. She is attuned with her environment and her sexuality, and is possessed of an innocence that is authentic and unpretentious.”
